Barnaby Whitfield

Barnaby Whitfield, American traditional painter speaks about his work and influences ~ "I had an extremely sexualized childhood. I was aware of the intimate details of my parents relationship early on (loads of overshare). I was also sexually active at a very young age. And I was utterly determined not to be gay, even though I was sleeping with boys and girls equally. It created this huge mix of shame and obsession.

Right after I moved back to the states in my early 20's, I was the victim of a violent crime. A closeted man, a mutual 'friend'. It absolutely removed sexual activity from my agenda for years. Here was a man wanting to destroy me because of his desire. It was literally like a physical manifestation of what I was feeling towards myself, and it shook me to the core. It nearly tipped the balance so far on the side of shame to no return. That is where the grotesque and sexual created a relationship in my work. Or that is where it's born from. Like being caught up in the most amazing wet dream only to wake and see who is actually above you. Some grotesque character consuming you. But I think I am trying to paint that in reverse, to turn the horrific reality into the beautiful dream." Barnaby Whitfield  http://dirty-mag.com/03/art_whitfield.html

Agostino Arrivabene

Italian traditional painter Agostino Arrivabene's work is technically amazing and deeply moving. His work is like a disturbing surreal dream, one that is already slipping back into our subconscious. Like those startling moments just as you wake and remember only fleeting fragments of your dreaming, during which we the viewer are suspended between one reality and the other.

"I would like to stress the fact that my visionary vein stems from a mystical research: in my experience visions have always a mystical background, they are a strong communication line with the eternal, the mysterious and the infinity above us. As a man, I prefer to think of myself as a shaman, who throws prophecies to the world, who discloses messages and images concealing higher and wider meanings. At first these can be quite obscure even to myself, but as time goes by or through the sequence of works to come, they show their meaning." Agostino Arrivabene

Valérie Bastille

Valerie Bastille is a Canadian digital artist who predominately uses Photoshop and Wacom tablet to paint her quirky female subjects.  Her strong use of either vibrant or pastel contrasting colours and the textured brushstrokes create drama and give her work a sense of strength and boldness.  The elongated bodies and the huge luminous eyes that often stare out at the viewer create connection and evocate a quiet sense of femininity.  I havent featured a digital artist for a little while so I hope you enjoy Valerie's beautiful paintings.
